Why ebook ≠ paperback

Why your ebook cover can't go directly on a paperback

KDP's ebook spec is one image: front cover at 1600×2560 pixels, RGB, no bleed, no spine, no back. Paperback wants a single wrap PDF — front + spine + back + 0.125" bleed on every outside edge, at 300 DPI, with all design elements extending into the bleed area so they survive the trim. Drop your ebook cover on a paperback template and you get white bleed edges plus an empty spine and back where your back-cover blurb should sit.

The spine width depends on page count and paper type — a 300-page novel needs a 0.6756" spine on white paper, 0.75" on cream. The back cover wants a blurb (typically 100-150 words), an author bio (optional), and a barcode-safe zone in the lower-right corner. KDP rejects covers where these aren't all sized correctly within ~0.05" tolerance.

We do the layout math: resample your front cover to the trim's 300 DPI pixel size, place it on the right side of the wrap, compose a back panel matching the front's dominant colors, drop your blurb in a serif or sans body font with the safe-zone margin, render spine text rotated 90° centered on the spine width, and export everything as a single print-ready PDF. Skip Photoshop, skip InDesign — upload, type your blurb, export.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How does the converter pick the back cover's color?

We sample the dominant color from the bottom 20% of your front cover image. If your front is mostly black, the back will be black. If it's a sunset orange, the back picks up that tone. For ultimate control, you can leave the back as plain black and just rely on the blurb text — most KDP novels do this.

What if my front cover is lower than 300 DPI at paperback size?

We upscale using a high-quality Lanczos algorithm — soft details get sharper, but if your original was very low resolution (under 1000 px wide for a 6×9 trim) the print may still look noticeably soft. We show a non-blocking warning when this happens. For best results, design your ebook cover at 1800×2700 or higher.

Can I edit the spine text or back blurb after I see the preview?

Yes. The preview updates live as you type. You only pay when you click "Export print-ready PDF" — preview generations are free and unlimited (subject to bot protection).

What does the 3-credit export cost include?

One print-ready PDF (full wrap, 300 DPI, RGB, fonts embedded, KDP-compliant bleed and safe zones), stored on our CDN for 24 hours so you can re-download if needed. If KDP rejects the file for any reason we'll send a refund-ticket link (we've never seen this happen, but the safety net is there).

Why don't you export CMYK?

KDP's paperback submission spec accepts RGB sRGB PDFs and auto-converts to CMYK during print prep. CMYK was once mandatory but Amazon dropped that requirement in 2023. If a reviewer ever asks for CMYK (rare), convert the file in Photoshop or GIMP and re-upload — your purchased export remains valid.

Do you keep my cover image?

No. Uploaded files are stored on a temporary CDN bucket with a 24-hour TTL — they auto-delete after a day whether or not you export. We never train models on your cover, never resell, never display your cover publicly. The R2 path is private with a signed URL that expires.

Can I generate the front cover with you instead of uploading?

Yes — if you don't have a front cover yet, our AI book cover generator (the wizard) creates one in 60 seconds. Generate the front, then come here to make it a paperback wrap. The wizard already passes the trim and spine specs forward so you only run the math once.

Will this work for hardcover or large-print trims?

Not in this version. The converter supports the 6 most common KDP paperback trims (5×8 through 7×10). Hardcover and large-print are on the v2 roadmap. For now, use the Cover Size Calculator for any KDP trim, and fall back to manual layout in Affinity / InDesign for hardcover wraps.
