Where these facts come from, and what this page will not decide

Every trim, its physical size, its regular-or-large class and its page-count windows are read from Amazon's published paperback trim table for the Amazon KDP, US store (kdp.amazon.com), last compared against that page on 2026-08-27. Other marketplaces publish a different catalogue, and hardcover, custom trims and non-US stores are outside this page.

The page-count window is a fact about a trim AND a print option together, not about a trim alone. All 5 print options are listed under each trim with their own range, because the largest trims accept fewer pages than the rest and one combination is not offered at all. Summarising a trim as a single page range would hide exactly the case that gets a book rejected after it has been typeset.

Nothing is checked against a page count until you say you have a final formatted one — the extent your finished layout reports, not an estimate. Until then every print option reads "page-count fit not checked", which is a different answer from "compatible". An unchecked fact shown as a pass is the failure this page is built to avoid.

There is no best trim here, and no ranking, score or genre advice, because Amazon publishes none and neither do we. The page compares, narrows and explains consequences. A selected trim appears only when you press the button that selects it, it stays selected even when a later constraint contradicts it, and it is never swapped for another one.

Which trim size should I choose?

This tool will not answer that, and no tool honestly can — Amazon publishes no recommended trim, no popularity ranking and no genre guidance, so anything claiming one is an opinion dressed as a specification. What it does give you is every fact the decision turns on: all 16 standard US-store trims drawn to one scale so you can see which are narrower, wider, taller or square; which print options KDP offers at each; how many pages each of those options accepts; and, if you already have a final formatted page count, which combinations actually fit it. The choice stays yours, and the tool records it only when you make it.

Is 6 × 9 the standard KDP paperback size?

There is no single standard size. Amazon lists 16 standard paperback trims for the US store and prints all of them; 6 × 9 in is one entry in that table with no special status attached to it. What differs between them is real and worth comparing: the finished proportions, whether the trim counts as regular or large, and — on the five largest trims — how many pages the print options will accept.

What is the difference between a regular and a large trim size?

It is Amazon’s own split, and it is about printing cost rather than geometry. Amazon says books measuring more than 6.12 inches in width or more than 9 inches in height are considered large trim sizes and have different printing costs. The label is carried here exactly as Amazon uses it. It does not mean large trims are advanced, worse or less suitable; it means your unit cost is calculated differently.

Do I need my page count to use this?

No. With no page count you still get every physical fact, both interior page rectangles and the full print-option list with each option’s page window — and every option reads "page-count fit not checked", because nothing has been checked. Page-count fit only appears once you confirm you have the final formatted count from your finished layout. A word-count estimate or a target length is not that number and cannot be used here.

My final page count is odd. What happens?

Your number stays exactly as you typed it. Amazon says it calculates the page count from the uploaded manuscript and rounds an odd total up to an even number if necessary, so the comparison shows that effective count separately and checks the print options against it. It is a calculation rule, not an instruction to insert a blank page.

I picked a trim and then added a constraint that contradicts it. Why did nothing change?

Because the choice is yours and the conflict is a fact — they are two different things and replacing one with the other would hide both. Your trim stays selected, and the page says plainly which constraint it now conflicts with. You can change the constraint, or choose a different trim yourself. Nothing is substituted for you, and no replacement is suggested.

Why doesn’t the next step already know the trim I picked?

Deliberately. A trim on its own is not a publishing specification: the exact interior setup needs the trim, the final formatted page count, the print option and whether the interior bleeds, all four confirmed together. Carrying one of them forward would look like the whole set had been settled when it had not. The Interior Setup calculator asks for all four and validates them as a unit before any of them become final specs.
